The Division of English currently offers a Major and a Minor in English Literature, both the MA and the PhD by research, and General Elective courses to all NTU students. We will also begin offering a Creative Writing minor in January 2008. By contributing to the university at large, and to those students who choose English Literature as their major, we provide a significant contribution to the New Undergraduate Experience at NTU.

The new and vibrant Division of English encourages innovative thought, open expression, and high levels of interaction and debate between academic staff and students with the aim of developing a thriving and exciting home for ideas and creative expression. We accommodate contemporary innovative approaches to literary study in a spirit of openness and intellectual discovery while cultivating an environment that encourages adventurous thinking from a diversity of perspectives.

While the Division of English will offer a full range of courses on traditional canonical literature across its academic programmes, it also remains constantly alert to developments in contemporary literature and culture including Asian and South East Asian literary and cultural developments.

This four-year Direct Honours Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature focuses on traditional areas of English literary studies while also accommodating contemporary innovative approaches to literary study.  Significant elements of this BA degree include comparative literature, Singapore literature and culture, International Asian literature, contemporary literature, dramatic literature, critical and literary theory, cultural studies, film studies, postmodernism, new literatures in English and gender studies. Furthermore, students are also given the opportunity to specialise in one or more of these areas during their undergraduate education. The Direct Honours Degree includes a Final Year Essay, which will allow students to give expression to their chosen area(s) of literature.
