We offer two 3-year direct honours undergraduate degree programmes, the Bachelor of Accountancy and the Bachelor of Business. What is most appealing to you would be the other course options that go with your first degree, from second majors taken here at NBS to minor programmes offered by other schools in NTU. In addition, for students with an appetite for two degrees, we also offer double degree programmes, namely, Double Degree in Accountancy & Business (new!) and Double Degree in Business & Computing to meet your personal interests and career aspirations.
Our rigorous and relevant curriculum balances conceptual knowledge with practical and applied elements. To keep abreast with the rapidly changing economic and business landscape, the curriculum of the respective majors is carefully designed and constantly revised to meet the demands and requirements of industry. Our discipline and various major options tailor our graduates for many jobs in different industries and professions such as Banking, Insurance, IT, Accounting, Taxation, Auditing, Human Resources Consulting, Marketing, Actuarial Science, etc. In short, we offer students a wide range of majors, an array unparalleled anywhere else around this region.
In 2000, we further enhanced and re-modelled our Accountancy curriculum through a collaboration with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, whose Accountancy programme is consistently ranked number one for the past 20 years in U.S. and the world. Project Discovery, the new teaching approach under the revamp, focuses on developing knowledge and skills that students need to succeed in the ever competitive and complex business environment. Now, all our undergraduates undergo such a discovery-based learning environment for their courses, imparting to them valuable skills of teamwork, presentation, writing and analytical competencies.
We have the most established and well-regarded Accountancy programme in Singapore and the region, with a long tradition (more than 5 decades) of training professional accountants for leadership roles as partners in accounting firms, chief financial officers of major corporations and managing directors of public and private companies.
A three-year direct honours programme, our Bachelor of Accountancy degree is recognised as a professional accounting qualification in Singapore by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore and the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority. It is also accredited by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, CPA Australia, Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, for entry into their respective programmes.
We are also proud to add that our degree is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). We are among only 5 schools in the world, outside of the U.S., to have the AACSB accreditation in accounting. In addition, you are assured the best Accountancy education with us as we have top accounting professors teaching the programme – we are ranked top three based on a recent evaluation ranking of accounting faculty in the Asia-Pacific region (including Australia and New Zealand).
Partnering with the top US Accounting programme at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, we embarked on Project Discovery (PD) more than seven years ago, to radically transform the way that accounting is taught. Hailed as a breakthrough, the PD pedagogy requires discovery-based learning environments to be created through seminar-style teaching to facilitate students’ active learning, while professors serve as facilitators and mentors. Teaching and learning in the classroom are highly interactive, with students taking responsibility for their own learning and actively contributing through class participation, discussions and project presentations. Real-world cases and projects are emphasized to enable students to bridge theory with dynamic practice.
Through these active learning methods, our students thus acquire strong competencies in effective teamwork and communication. The PD approach, with its focus on critical thinking and problem-solving, also equips our students with the analytical skills to handle unstructured, complex and strategic challenges in business.
With the best accounting professors, up-to-date curriculum and teaching pedagogy, coupled with flexibility to encourage students to pursue exciting options such as overseas exchange, university minors, second majors, applied research projects and topped with a compulsory internship stint in industry, our graduates are more than well-prepared to meet the demands and challenges of the new global economy.
