The College of Engineering launched the Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Maritime Studies in July 2004. The programme focuses primarily on tertiary education in shipping, business, management, and maritime science and technology, to build up the expertise of the local shipping industry as well as working towards establishing Singapore as a centre of excellence for shipping business, research and development. Starting in August 2008, the Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Maritime Studies with Business Major is offered jointly by the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Nanyang Business School. These programmes are targeted for suitable candidates with GCE A-levels, IB, and diploma holders who have relevant qualifications.
The Maritime Studies programmes are conducted jointly by NTU and the Norwegian School of Management (BI), Norway, and leads to the award of the Maritime Studies BSc degrees by NTU. Students will complete a semester of their studies at BI, Norway in their third year of studies. An internship to the maritime industry as well as field visits supplements the learning experience.
The maritime industry is poised to grow 6 to 8% up to 2018. The maritime industry offers good career prospects with commensurate salaries, job stability and job flexibility. Graduates are expected to fill key leadership roles in the maritime industry.
Our fresh graduates are expected to be employed in a broad and diverse range of shore-based jobs which include Marine Operations Executive, Chartering Executive, Logistics Executive, Freight Forwarding Executive, Warehouse Planner, Post-Fixture Executive, Trade/Pricing Executive, Manager (Voyage Planning), Accounts Manager (Sea Freight), Supply Chain Coordinator, Shipping Executive, Cargo Claims Manager, Export/Import Executive, Brokerage Executive, Analyst (Market Intelligence) and Business Development Manager.
