National Institute of Education (NIE): Arts (Social Studies)

This is a programme which can support teachers who may need to respond with cross-disciplinary perspectives in the disciplines of history, geography as well as in social studies. The goal is to help the programme participants develop a critical understanding of social studies, history and geography with a strong grounding in the philosophies that have guided both scholarship and the development of each of the relevant disciplines and how these can be applied to studies of the social issues of our time.
While the programme is designed for those who have relevant background knowledge in one or more of the following disciplines and school courses such as geography, history and social studies, it is tailored for candidates wishing to broaden their multi-disciplinary perspectives on the development of our societies in space and time.

Bachelor of Arts (Honours), or equivalent, in a relevant discipline, or
-
Bachelor of Arts, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline, and at least two years of professional working experience
Candidature
The degree of Master of Arts (Social Studies) is offered only on a part-time basis.
Structure
There are two options within this programme. Participants are required to either do:
- Three core courses (nine AUs), five elective courses (15 AUs), and a dissertation (six AUs), or
- Three core courses (nine AUs) and seven elective courses (21 AUs)
You do not have to make the decision when you apply. The decision on what option to select is made upon completion of six courses.
