This deparment is responsible for teaching five main subjects: Oral Surgery, Oral Pathology, Dental Anaethesia, Dental Radiology and Histology.
The course in Dental Anatomy and Histology introduces our first-year undergraduates to dentistry. The lectures and practical classes equip students with knowledge of the human dentition and structure of the jaws.
Dental Anaesthesia and Radiology are taught in the second year. Most dental procedures require the use of anaesthesia while dental radiographs are an indispensible diagnostic tool.
Oral Pathology and dental extractions are covered in the third year. Students are required to perform a minimum number of extractions as part of their undergraduate curriculum.
Having built the foundations of the fundamental aspects of Oral Surgery and Pathology, the final-year students are given the oppotunity to perform wisdom teeth operations on their own. Students also observe surgical procedures carried out under General Anaesthesia.
Oral Diagnosis and Oral Medicine Clinics in the final year introduces them to a host of commonly encountered oral diseases. Through these sessions, they learn to diagnose and manage different types of oral diseases.
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has placed much emphasis on its research. Its teaching staff has numerous research articles published in international dental and medical journals. Current research in the department focuses on dental implants and orofacial pain.
