We have come a long way from a small department with less than 20 students per year (mostly males) about thirty years ago to a department with an annual enrolment of more than 280 undergraduates today (with half of them females). While this could be a reflection of changing demographics and public interest in the profession, chemical engineers of today remain totally committed to utilizing energy and materials in the most effective way possible to support technology development and human progress. The increasing awareness of climate change and the dwindling supply of fossil fuels have made chemical engineering more relevant than ever. As one of the largest chemical engineering departments in the region, we feel a strong sense of mission to educate future generations of chemical engineers with a sound foundation in sustainable processes and environmental responsibility. We are fortunate to have attracted the very best local and international students, and a strong faculty with a diverse range of experiences in pedagogy and research from world-class universities. Our recent award of a $10M NRF grant in membrane research is testimonial of our ability to respond to world challenges creatively. I hope the following pages will convince you that we belong to one of the finest institutions in the world.
