The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the eight Departments and Divisions in the Faculty of Engineering of the National University of Singapore, which is ranked 10th in the world for technology. Research and Education are driven through three exciting programmes embracing the increasingly integrated, interdisciplinary nature of modern civil engineering:

  • Offshore Engineering
  • Protective Technology
  • Hazards, Risks & Mitigation

To support these programmes the Department has a team of more than thirty highly qualified and professionally experienced academic members. They regularly conduct specialized short courses and provide consultancy and advisory services. Interacting closely with industry, government bodies and statutory boards, they are actively engaged in research and development activities. These R & D programmes are well supported by research grants from the University, Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR) and other government agencies as well as private sector organizations.

Civil Engineering (CE) at National University of Singapore (NUS)

Civil engineering is a broad field of engineering that deals with the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of fixed structures or public infrastructure, as they are related to earth, water, or civilization and their processes. In essence civil engineering is the profession which makes the world a more habitable place to live. Hence the civil engineer seeks innovative solutions to tackle the ever-changing problems associated with the living environment, i.e., how we live, work, travel and play. Thus as long as a higher standard of living is demanded, there will be a need for civil engineers to develop and design better living environment. As the broadest field in engineering, civil engineering requires the integration of many areas of specialties.

Our CE Programme

Our CE Programme aims to produce engineer leaders and provide our graduates with multiple career pathways. Fundamentals will be sufficiently covered and with flexible curriculum structure, our students are able to tailor their programmes to suit their aspiration whether to become specialists to tackle challenging CE projects or to cover the broad spectrum of civil engineering and management to be CEOs, CFOs, bankers, regulators or policy makers.

CE Degree Requirement

  • Pass the modules in accordance with Table A.
  • Pass 6 technical electives
  • Satisfy all other requirements as prescribed by the Faculty or the University.
  • Students are required to read a Level-1000 Physics module (except GEK/GEM modules) towards the ULR-Breadth/UEM requirement.
