The purpose of an Engineering and Technology (ETM) education programme is to train engineers who wish to receive formal management education for their professional work in engineering, manufacturing, research and development (R&D) or technology commercialisation. The purpose of a companion ETM research programme is to provide thought leadership in ETM areas such as Technology Strategy, Innovation Strategy, R&D Management, complex project management, Intellectual Property Management, etc, and during the research process train PhD level graduates and create local case-studies which could be used to enhance the education programmes.
“linking engineering, science and management disciplines to address the issues involved in planning, development and implementation of technological capabilities to shape and accomplish the strategic and operational objectives of an organization”.

A full-fledge MSc (MOT) programme has been successfully launched since August 2005. It covers the following broad areas:
Another full-fledge MSc (IP Management) Programme has also been successfully launched since August 2006. It covers the following broad areas:
The Undergraduate Minor in Management of Technology aims to bridge the gap between traditional engineering and business education by offering a unique curriculum to a select group of highly qualified undergraduates drawn from the Faculty of Engineering and School of Business. Each student in the programme will complete six modules accordingly. To strengthen their foundations, Engineering students will take three modules in the School of Business and Business students will take three modules in the Faculty of Engineering. The Engineering and Business students are then required to attend three special modules together to complete the six modules required. The Minor Programme in MOT was successfully launched in August 2004. ETM Research Programmes The academic staff will conduct research in the broad area of technological innovations. Both MEng and PhD degrees are offered to prospective graduate students through full-time or part-time research. Engineering Systems Initiative A brand new Engineering Systems Initiative (ESI) has been launched in the Faculty of Engineering since mid 2005. Its education and research programmes have great synergy with the ETM/MOT initiative. |
Both undergraduate and postgraduate study programmes will be offered. The undergraduate Minor in Management of Technology will be offered jointly by the Faculty of Engineering (FoE) and School of Business (BIZ). BIZ will also offer a Major in Management (Technology) which will have several modules offered by D-ETM. It is an opportunity for egineering students to take up this option as a second major. There are also postgraduate modules offered by the Faculty of Engineering, School of Business, Design Technology Institute and the IP Academy which are relevant to ETM. PhD students in various departments of Engineering are encouraged to take those modules to broaden their studies.
