The National University of Singapore (NUS) is one of two local tertiary institutions that award fully accredited degrees in engineering. The Faculty of Engineering is the largest of 11 faculties/schools at the National University of Singapore. Student numbers have grown by leaps and bounds, from only 300 in the late 1970s to as many as 10,000 students today.

It has developed into a cosmopolitan environment comprising the Bioengineering Division and five departments: Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Industrial & Systems Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

Eight undergraduate engineering disciplines are offered, namely, Bioengineering, Chemical, Environmental, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Industrial & Systems, and Mechanical Engineering.

There are also two new programmes in Environmental Science & Engineering (ESEP) and the Management of Science & Technology (MOST).

In addition, the Faculty offers part-time undergraduate courses for polytechnic graduates and working professionals leading to the Bachelor of Technology. Many of the best engineering brains in Singapore have come from our Faculty.

Since its inception in 1968, the Faculty has contributed substantially to the rapid industrial and economic growth of the nation while continuing to contribute to a growing knowledge-based economy.

Professional engineering education in Singapore had its humble beginnings in 1956 when classes were then held at the Singapore campus of the University of Malaya. A four-year diploma course was set up at the Singapore Polytechnic when the Department of Engineering was moved to Kuala Lumpur in 1958. In 1964, it was replaced by a four-year Bachelor of Engineering course.

However, it was not until 1969 that a more local identity was established with the inauguration of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Singapore. With the merger in 1980 between the University of Singapore and Nanyang University, the Faculty of Engineering came under the National University of Singapore.

In the past two decades, rapid changes and developments have taken place in the Faculty with curriculum changes and new programmes introduced to keep pace with new global technological changes. New alliances with top notch regional and overseas institutions have also been established with the Faculty always maintaining the competitive edge.

Meanwhile, the Faculty’s thriving research environment has brought about outstanding research and development. Many research institutes have been incubated within the Faculty for major R&D projects, thus leading the nation into top gear in the technological arena.

Being the most established university in Singapore, NUS and the Faculty of Engineering have a rich history. Every effort is made to carefully manage renewal and change with quality faculty members working in cutting-edge research areas. The student cohort is also supported by dedicated staff with state-of-the-art laboratories and an excellent teaching infrastructure.

The Faculty of Engineering at the National University of Singapore has an illustrious history going back to 1968. It prides itself as a major school in an institution, which is ranked among the top 20 of the world’s best universities and top 3 universities in Asia. In the latest survey by Times of London, NUS ranked No. 10 in the world’s top 100 technology universities.

Over the years, we have made substantial contributions to the industrial and economic growth of Singapore, not only through training several generations of engineers but also by spearheading research and development in many areas across technological and geographical boundaries.

Today, we are a vibrant community of 8,500 students and 600 staff members, comprising eight major departments: Bioengineering; Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering; Civil Engineering; Electrical & Computer Engineering; Environmental Science & Engineering; Industrial & Systems Engineering; Materials Science & Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. With an increasing international student and staff population, the Faculty has developed into a truly cosmopolitan environment for tertiary education, emphasizing both fundamentals and applications. Our dynamic research culture has also attracted substantial research funding — “$54,648,701 in Year 2006/7”.

To this end, the inter-disciplinary environment, the wide range of programmes, the stringent yet flexible admission criteria, and the diversity of curriculum are designed not only to prepare our graduates to meet rigorous professional demands, but also nurture them into leaders of enterprise and society.
