The Bachelor of Science (Econs) is a 4-year programme modeled after the best of America’s undergraduate economics programmes. The curriculum is similar in structure to the two other degree programmes offered by SMU (the BBM and the BAcc) both of which have been developed in close collaboration with the consistently top ranked Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
The distinctive features of the programme are as follows:
• The BSc (Econs) programme is broad based, offers flexibility in the choice of subjects, and at the same time, allows the student to major in Economics or double major in Economics and Finance.
• The double major in Economics and Finance programme is especially attractive to students who wish to build a career in the financial sector. Moreover, further reflecting the synergy between the various SMU degree programmes, students are able to enroll for double degree programmes in Economics and Business, or Economics and Accountancy.
• Students who wish to graduate with Honours are required to complete an Honours Seminar that is equivalent to two course units.
• Each student can choose his/her courses according to his/her preferred interests and pace. In order to cater for this flexibility, a wide variety of courses are offered in each subject areas. Each student must read a minimum of 3 courses and a maximum of 6 courses per term.
Teaching Approach
The SMU undergraduate programme moves away from the traditional lecture and tutorial format, and instead adopts a seminar teaching approach, in order to enhance interaction and critical thinking. Classes are deliberately kept small, averaging 40 students each. Students are assessed continuously through class participation, assignments, projects and examinations.
Award of the BSc (Econ) degree
The BSc (Econs) is a four-year meritorious honours programme. However, many students can expect to complete the programme in less than 4 years with Advanced Standing or fast-tracking by taking some courses in the third term. Students with advanced standing may be granted credits of up to five courses. On successful completion of the BSc (Econs) programme, students will be awarded the BSc degree accordingly, depending on their overall performance: BSc (Econs) cum laude (with honours), BSc (Econs) magna cum laude (with high honours) or BSc (Econs) summa cum laude (with highest honours).
