The University commenced its curricular instruction in 2000 with a single school - the School of Business. The School opened its doors to its pioneer batch of Bachelor of Business Management (BBM) students in August 2000.

A two-storey building was constructed on a piece of land at Evans Road at the fringe of the so-called Bukit Timah Campus, formerly home to tertiary institutions such as the University of Singapore and the National Institute of Education (NIE).

The facilities at the premises included five seminar rooms, a media theatre, discussion rooms, a library , a reading room, a conference room, a students’ activities room, and faculty and administrative offices. Faculty, staff and students alike maximised the usage of the limited facilities and had a good and enjoyable first year.

In its second academic year, the University and the School moved into the extensively renovated Bukit Timah Campus which was equipped with state-of-the-art amenities.

The School moved again in 2005 when SMU relocated to the historic Bras Basah district in the heart of the city, a move that brought vitality to an area that once housed several of Singapore’s premier schools. Our current location at Stamford Road is in close proximity to the business and financial centre of Singapore.

The Bachelor of Business Management (BBM) is a four-year full time direct meritorious honours programme with a requirement of 36 courses*. However, students may be able to complete the programme in three years through the granting of credits (a maximum of five credits may be given) or by taking more courses in the regular terms or in the summer terms.

*Students admitted before AY 2008/2009 must complete 35 courses from all the subject areas

At the heart of the BBM programme is the University Core, which comprises courses considered fundamental to all students at SMU, such as Analytical Skills & Creative Thinking, Leadership & Team Building, Ethics & Social Responsibility, and Technology & World Change.
Broad-based learning is achieved primarily through requiring students to read courses within the following menus: Arts & Sciences, Global & Regional studies, Technology and Career Skills. The Business and Management courses build upon this foundation, and equip students skills and expertise necessary for thriving in a modern business environment.
Further depth is achieved by allowing students to choose a concentration - in Finance or in Marketing - in the second year of the programme.

Each subject area has a list of courses whereby each student chooses his/her courses according to his/her preferred interests and pace. Each student must read a minimum of 3 courses and a maximum of 6 courses per term.
